Drilling for Pickups
In part 3 of the video series on installing pickups, I select some screws and show some tricks for drilling the holes right where you want them.
For the screws, I chose some slotted silver 3/4” long #4 wood screws. Even though the Bigsby and tuners are finished in gold, I think these silver screws will look good with the polepieces.
Since the new holes will overlap a bit with the old filled holes, the drill bit will have a tendency to walk into the old hole. The bit always wants to take the path of least resistance. I’m using a Rockler Self-Centering Bit, which makes it really easy to drill precisely centered holes – it’s good for things like door hinges and cabinet hardware too. If you don’t have one of those, the next best thing is a brad point drill bit, which has a sharp spike to prevent the bit from shifting. With a brad point bit or regular bit, you’ll want to use something sharp like a drill punch or awl to give the drill bit a good starting point.

Thanks for making this video. I hope that you’ll make another video about changing H-H es-335 style semi hollow pickups.

Hi, thanks for the video.
Do you think wiring it like if it was a 2 pickup guitar and adding a switch under the pickguard to turn on the middle pickup would be hard?
John

It wouldn’t be hard, but there’s some questions to consider: What will you do with the 3rd knob?
When you flip the switch, are you just adding in the middle pickup at 100% volume? Or do you intend to leave the 3rd volume there, and just have the switch disable it?
It might make more sense to make the middle volume pot a push-pull (pull to switch it off).

That’s an awesome idea, but I don’t know how to do it… when are you going to upload your next video?

Patience, my friend 🙂
I’m planning to do this mod eventually, but there’s a few other projects to complete first.

Your videos are great. Your consideration and patience really shines through. The little things that aren’t necessarily related to guitars, like spaces to find the new drill holes, are just great. Things like that we usually don’t think about until we get there, and then our projects take longer than we thought or hoped they would.
Also, I just read your review of this guitar on MusiciansFriend. That was a funny surprise.

Another cool vid. Thanks very much for taking the time to do this.
I wish Epiphone would do this guitar with just two pickups also. I’d be buying one if they did.

Thanks for a very detailed and helpful video, but to be honest, based on the title of this three-part video series, I was expecting to see something (anything?) on electronics and wiring, because in essence, this isn’t a video series on “replacing” pickups, but rather on “drilling” for pickups or “mounting” pickups. Yes, there are wiring diagrams that a guy can follow for the most part, but without any discussion of the ‘wire’ connections, phase considerations, etc., its a disappointment.

@RubbahSlippahs – these videos were a companion to my other video series on electronics wiring volume/tone, soldering, etc. See my channel for those. I didn’t cover phase and coil splitting, as I was working with P-90’s. I may get to that some day in another video 🙂

How do you think about the genuine epiphone p90 pickups?
I amd considering GFS PUs.

I found the stock pickups a bit dull. See my video comparing the Epiphone P-90’s with the Vintage Vibe Guitars P-90’s here: watch?v=fxc6s6tXefE

The ruler against the three pups was good to see (perfectionist) LOL
Again… That background music is really tasty. Kinda “Wilco”-ish.
