Another Tone Cap Shootout
There are a variety of expensive “boutique” guitar tone capacitors out there, which I haven’t tried and didn’t include in my tone cap comparison project.
I just came across this audio comparison by “Kernel of Wisdom” which examines a bunch of the more expensive tone caps including a vintage bumblebee, modern bumblebee, Jensen Paper-In-Oil, Vitamin Q, and Luxe Grey Tiger.
Have a look and a listen!

Love your instructional/informational vids. Can’t wait for the book to come out !
I am on a quest to find (and remedy) a problem. With humbucker equipped guitars, why are the 5th and 6th strings always sounding so dull, dark, lifeless with no cut?
Is that the nature of humbuckers? Do some pickups cut better than others? My Les Paul with 57 Classics does this, but so do most others. ANy advice? And raising the pole pieces makes them louder, no brighter. Thanks Jim

Hi Jimmy,
I haven’t noticed that with my humbuckers, but admittedly most of my guitars are single-coils.
A couple of suggestions– you mentioned raising the pole pieces, but have you tried lowering the pickups? Having the pole pieces too close to the strings can cause “wolf tones”, robbing sustain and brightness. May be more of a problem the larger gauge lower strings.
Have you tried different strings?
No plans for a book just yet!! 🙂
